Ribosomes initiate translation on the majority of eukaryotic mRNAs by attaching to the 5' end followed by base-by-base scanning of the 5' UTR until they reach the initiation codon. The heterotrimeric eukaryotic .initiation factor (elF) 4F promotes ribosomal attachment by binding to the cap via its eIF4E subunit and locally unwinding mRNA through the concerted action of its eIF4G and eIF4A (RNA helicase) subunits together with eIF4B to generate a ribosomal-binding site.
