In order to understand the intrinsic character of metal flow during the forging of disc-shaped components, investigations of the effects of die shape on metal flow behaviour were conducted based on a wheel hub part, using the finite element method and experiment, and the regularity of metal flow was analysed. The results indicate that the female die with the cone angle makes the metal flow into the die cavity more easily during forming, which supplied with theoretical references for the investigation on the plastic forming of complicated forgings. From a plastic mechanics viewpoint, the deformation of closed-die forging can be divided into three basic deformation modes: cylindrical compression, ring compression, and pseudo-extrusion; this enables the analysis of forging to be modularized. By analysing different deformation modes and coupled flowing behaviours, the rule of metal flowing was disclosed for complex components. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
