Seawall construction methods in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, evolved as materials such as cut stone, concrete and steel became available, as the understanding of geotechnical principles grew, and as the growth of trade required more substantial coastal structures. As a significant number of 19th century stone seawalls are still in use in the Boston region, techniques for evaluating and repairing surviving historic structures, as opposed to replacing them, are important during the ongoing revitalization of the harbour.
