Marine engine manufacturers are developing adaptive engine control systems that utilise the output of various sensors to run algorithms and diagnostic routines in order to operate the engine at optimal conditions, with respect to fuel consumption and emissions. The selection and evaluation of such sensors is a very important process and it involves extensive hardware testing on the test bed.The current study describes the selection and evaluation of NOx sensors for possible adaptation in the control system of marine diesel engines.The most promising sensors for such an application were installed in the exhaust system of two different test engines.The results from both test beds were comparable and the analysis revealed the main areas of concern with regards to the applicability of the sensors in marine diesel engines operating with HFO fuel.
