A new synthesis of naphthopyrones and hexahydrospiro [naphthalene-2,4'-phenanthrene] -l,l'-diones has been accomplished by the Friedel-Crafts reaction of various 1-tetralones with a, beta-unsaturated acids in the presence of polyphos-phoric acid (PPA).
