GDPR series: the new data subject rights

The European Commission's reform of EU data protection rules, resulting in the General Data Protection Regulation (the 'GDPR' or 'the Regulation'), is intended to put individuals back in control of their data amid new challenges resulting from the rapid rise of digital technologies such as social networking sites, location-based services and smart cards. It is increasingly difficult to ensure that an individual's right to the protection of personal data - as enshrined in Article 8 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union - is adhered to, given the proliferation of new technologies and data-driven business models. By strengthening data subjects rights, the GDPR strives to redress this balance to give individuals greater control of their personal data.
