This article has its roots in the need to perform multiple reworks of an early version of a new family of high-speed press-fit connectors with a sensitive mechanical buildup. The challenge has been to press in the thin and weak needle eye pins correctly. Different variants of this press-fit connector, with slightly different pin geometries and materials, were shown to cause damage of different kinds in the plated holes during rework. After several redesigns, this specific highspeed press-fit connector became more robust, but the need to find out more about the effects of rework for this type of connector remained.
