In this issue, we mark the sad passing of Dr. Randy Pausch on July 25, 2008, through a scientific obituary commissioned from Dr. Dennis R. Proffitt, University of Virginia. We would like to thank Dr. Proffitt for writing this excellent obituary, and we hope that the scientific work of Dr. Pausch described in this article will act as a reminder of his work, as well as provide inspiration to all of us.rnAlso in this issue, we have the first of a series of occasional papers on the history of virtual reality' and related research areas. The Kalman Filter has provided a huge impact on issues of tracking within virtual reality (VR), and Dr. Greg Welch, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has written a very useful history. We encourage others who wish to contribute a such a historical paper to discuss this with the editors; the scope is wide, including virtual reality, telepresence, augmented reality, haptics, auditory virtual environments, or any topic in the full range of research areas that we consider in this journal.
