A decision by the Northern Ireland government to eliminate a requirement that all new housing include on-site renewable energy systems threatens to disrupt the renewables industry's plans in the region, a leading supplier of home heating and lighting systems has claimed. Calling the policy change "both irresponsible and misguided," UK company Velux said the announcement by Peter Robinson, Northern Ireland executive finance chief that housing developers would not be required to install microgeneration in new homes contradicts government plans to improve energy efficiency as well as leaving much of the renewable energy industry with significantly lower demand than it anticipated. Velux's products include solar hot water systems for households.
