The creation of a series of unique hydrogenerators for the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower plant (HPP) was an important step in the development of the industry. Their rated capacity and pole power (16.9 MV · A) considerably exceeded those of all earlier-generation hydroelectric generators. They implemented the best achievements of domestic electrical engineering. Some principal engineering solutions used in hydrogenerators of the Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP had been tested in earlier designed hydrogenerators, including those of the Krasnoyarsk HPP. These solutions include direct water cooling of the primary winding, forced air cooling of the exciting winding with the use of transverse channels in pole coils, a half-umbrella configuration of the generator with one guide bearing in the top spider and the toe resting against the turbine cap, and a shaftless design of the armature. It can be said that many of the novelties realized in hydrogenerators of the Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP have proved successful in operation but have not been employed by foreign companies. The design of hydrogenerators of the Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP went far ahead of the level of world hydroelectric engineering at the tirne and even today makes them an example of compactness, efficiency, and reliability. Table 1 presents the main data of world's largest hydroelectric generators built at approximately the same time.
