In the early morning hours of november 13, 1965, the 5,000-ton cruise steamship Yarmouth Castle burned and sank about sixty miles from Nassau, thirteen miles north of Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas. The sinking took eighty-nine lives. Though this will be cold comfort to the friends and relatives of the dead, their loss was not entirely in vain. From this disaster came new legislation and an international agreement which would make the cruise trade safer for passengers and crews.
