Industry Should Avoid Hot Topic

The enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend. The nuclear industry should note this and reconsider its strategy of aligning itself with those who would ban the burning of coal and natural gas on the basis of their contributions to global warming. Last year the European Commission issued a report stating that Europe needs at least 85 additional nuclear power plants if it is to prevent increases in CO_2 emissions. In the U.S., the Nuclear Energy Institute's director of environmental programs is quoted on the organization's web site as saying, "Nuclear energy is a vital partner in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving overall air quality."
