Southeast Asia is one of the most important areas in the maritime world and is home to some ofthe most technologically advanced ports and container terminals. In the 21st century it has become indispensable to seaborne trade and the global economy. One of the biggest ports in the region is the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). Singapore has been at the forefront of innovation in the technology space and is currently building what will become the biggest container port in a single location the world in Tuas, western Singapore. However, as with ports and terminals the world over, Singapore has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused chaos and congestion across the global supply chain and raised uncertainty over the viability of major infrastructure projects. "COVID-19 has caused major disruptions to the global economy," said Quah Ley Hoon, Chief Executive, MPA.
