Hong Kong Port is one of the busiest container ports in the world. In terms of vessel arrivals and departures, cargo and passenger throughput, it is also one of the major ports of the world and is a gateway serving the southern parts of Mainland of China. The Hong Kong Marine Department is the administrator of the port, with the principal functions to ensure safe operation of the port and all Hong Kong waters as well as to operate the Hong Kong Shipping Register and safeguard the quality of Hong Kong registered ships. In the context of navigational safety, the Hong Kong Hydrographic Office (HKHO) - an establishment under the Hong Kong Marine Department, has taken on a role primarily as provider of nautical information for port users.
