VTS manufacturers say the market for vessel traffic systems is set to grow as more and more ports acquire new VTS or upgrade existing systems. They also suggest that, worldwide, in the last five years, Euro 100-200m per annum has been spent on VTS. Most VTS systems that have been in service for more than a few years use technology adapted from one of two applications for automatic target acquisition — marine shipboard radar, and air traffic control tracking.
