Dredging debate hits the headlines

In each case, dredging projects are being proposed in order to enhance the competitiveness of US ports, but non-governmental organisations and independent experts remain fiercely critical of the economic and environmental justification for carrying out much of the work. Even the well known, internationally respected Washington Post has turned its attention to the whole issue of dredging. In September, it ran a story claiming that the Corps of Engineers 'biased its studies in order to justify expensive, environmentally contentious projects' which, it said, were often backed by powerful political interests.
