In December 2000, Kalmar officially announced the launch of its new shuttle carrier concept. The machine, essentially a smaller, simpler version of Kalmar's straddle carrier has been developed to meet the needs of ports gearing up to meet the challenge of 10,000TEU to 12,000TEU container vessels. The shuttle carrier will operate between the ship-to-shore cranes and the container stack and aims to substantially increase the speed and efficiency of stevedore's ship-handling operations. Currently, container transportation between the ship and the stack is handled by either terminal tractors or straddle carriers.
