'The Strength of Weak Ties' Revisited: Achieving True Integration of Disease Management and Lifestyle Management

A seminal paper in sociology is Mark Granovetter's "The Strength of Weak Ties." Recognizing that we all have closely knit groups of friends, as well as loosely held acquaintances, Granovetter argues that distinct advantage accrues to those who cultivate their weak ties and gain access to knowledge and insights that are lacking among their close ties. He further posits that those who spend most of their time with their close friends are deprived of news and innovations occurring in other social networks and risk limiting themselves to a provincial world view. This theory influenced social scientists and economists and offers a useful conceptual framework to explain the power of contemporary online social networks.
