Many view the US health care industry to be ineffective and inefficient. The authors of Paradox and Imperatives in Heath Care address this issue. The greed that drives executives to maximize profit has clouded their ability to see what is best for consumers, providers, and society. Whereas the authors do not claim to have solutions to all the challenges facing the current system, they do describe clear and practical strategies that are executable for the leaders in the industry by giving examples from other industries.rnThe 8 chapters are threaded together with economic theories; each addresses a different challenge and suggests solutions. For instance, Chapter 1 concerns critical changes for the health care industry that would result in a more effective system, regardless of the state of the economy. The needed changes address the high cost-low quality of care theme in the United States. Chapter 1 also notes that, as the demand for health care services and products increases, the supply side decreases or stays the same. The simple economic principle is explained: if demand increases, supply must increase to keep the cost at a somewhat unchanged level without considering other factors.
