Reinventing the Home Computer

Wander through Silicon Valley, the cradle of computing that stretches from San Jose to San Francisco, and it's not hard to see the Next Big Thing in home PCs. It's something called the Network Computer, and it's inside the gleaming glass towers of Oracle Corp. in tidy Redwood Shores. Or, wait, perhaps it's one of the many "information appliances" being developed at startup Diba Inc. inside a renovated warehouse in a gritty industrial section of Menlo Park. Or maybe it's the slick Internet television system of WebTV Networks in brainy Palo Alto. Then again, it could be the portable home-and-classroom computer being perfected at Apple Computer down in Cupertino.
