Incident at Black Rock

Halfway through the measured mile on the barren Black Rock desert of western Nevada, Craig Breedlove was doing 675 mph, one second away from accelerating past 700 mph and into the unknown. He could see the giant, square, orange mile markers with their integral timing lights rushing toward him, but at the same moment, he could feel the Spirit of America starting to go out of control. The air in front of the speeding jet car was becoming incompressible, and shock waves were buffeting the cockpit.
