When the novel coronavirus first took hold in the United States in early 2020, my colleague Dan Higgins and I were tasked with a unique job: Create a beauty shot of the microscopic public enemy number one. We'd both previously lent our artistic expertise to emergency responses for outbreaks of Ebola, Zika, and H1N1-and the CDC's ongoing battle with antibiotic resistance. So we had practice taking microbes that were incredibly dangerous, but essentially invisible, and transforming them into bold, striking figures. You need something that's going to grab attention as people are scrolling through the news or social media.
