On the bridge of the nuclear missile submarine U.S.S. Tennessee, exhilaration and tension combine to form a potent mix. It's surprisingly cramped, with room for five people packed close together. The boat is cruising on the surface at about 14 knots, fast enough to push water over the bow and to leave a long wake astern. Looking out over the ocean from my vantage point is breathtaking. But the tension that tempers the elation comes from knowing what lies below deck—24 nuclear missiles that could end the world as we know it.
