Drafting, or slip-streaming, occurs when two or more racecars run nose to tail and share the same pocket of air. In so doing, the cars speed up to 5 mph faster than they can on their own. Racing legend Junior Johnson first employed this technique in the 1960 Daytona 500, where he captured first place despite racing in a car that was 10 mph slower than the rest of the pack.
