It is easy to become complacent once a person settles into a routine, and this is just as true for engine builders as it is for any other profession. After gaining skill and experience to a proficient level, "pretty good" often becomes "good enough," especially if no one is complaining. If the customers are happy, and what you are doing seems to work, there is often little to drive further experimentation. In fact, we have known legendary engine builders who garnered larger-than-life reputations way back in the late 1960s that have managed to coast for decades doing the same old mediocre stuff.
