The Warning and Advisory Task of the Police: Forging a Link between Police Information and Multi-Agency Partnerships

Since 2005, the Dutch police have claimed a new warning and advisory task, whereby they should use information from their criminal investigations to warn and advise other public and private agencies, thus allowing these agencies to contribute to the management of crime. This new police task is intended to forge a link between police information and multi-agency and administrative approaches in the prevention and control of crime. This article deals with the implementation of this task. Empirical study has shown that serious obstacles have been encountered as a result of the quality of police information, inter-organizational relations, and cultural differences, among other things. To improve this implementation, it is suggested that the police should be more aware of such inter-organizational differences, relations, and sensitivities and develop the skills needed to deal with them.
