In 1920, Crossgar was described as a small but very clean town, situated twenty-one and a quarter-miles south of Belfast on the line of the Belfast County Down Railway.The population was about 550.The men were mainly engaged in agriculture and a great number of the female population were employed in the hand-sewed embroidery industry.
