Portsmouth University has developed two special 'Foundation Degrees' for serving police officers, both of which involve study-at-home and which can be completed over two years of part-time study. One is the Foundation Degree in Police Studies, open to all officers, which covers criminal justice, models of policing and community policing. The other is the Foundation Degree in Investigation and Evidence, which has been designed especially for officers involved in criminal investigation, and which covers models of investigation, forensic psychology and policing styles. This degree aims to support the professional development of investigators, in line with the Professionalising the Investigative Process (PIP). Both degrees also involve a work-related Professional Project, a piece of in-depth research on a topic chosen by the officer, and supervised by expert staff of the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies, the UK's largest criminology department.
