In the early years, after the founding of Polar Biology in 1982, most authors and readers were from relatively few countries. Since then, the community of polar biologists and, consequently, the volume of the journal have grown considerably, and today, Polar Biology is characterized by a highly international authorship and readership. In the tradition of Polar Biology's founding editor Gotthilf Hempel, the current editorial board feels the obligation to help promising scientists from a wide variety of countries to report their results in an internationally recognized journal. At the same time, we strive to maintain the high scientific standards of the published articles. Therefore, all manuscripts submitted to Polar Biology are sent to external referees for anonymous peer review. Hundreds of experts provide great input into the improvement of the manuscripts and secure a strict quality control for the journal. As most authors agree with, their comments contribute substantially to strengthening the submitted manuscripts. Below is a list of referees who have volunteered their time and expertise in the past year to evaluate submissions to Polar Biology. I would like to sincerely thank all referees for their efforts and gratefully acknowledge their continued service and support for our journal. The list includes all referees who submitted their reviews between January 1 and December 31, 2010 (number of reviews in brackets if more than one). Please accept my apologies if I have inadvertently omitted the name of any referee.
