The football referee assistance system has optical detectors (2) monitoring the field and providing video images of the background, corners, the players and the ball. The players positions are found, and an optical detector follows the ball, providing its trajectory and speed of movement. The installation interprets the player and ball positions as a function of the game rule book providing specific messages when the rules are broken. The messages are passed to the referee by wireless communications.
