Student Voice: Student voluntary work experience in Mauritius

To gain a placement in Mauritius, I had to apply to the country's Ministry of Health. They also required evidence from the university that I was a student on the BSc Honours Podiatric Medicine programme at UEL. Following this process, I was allocated a podiatrist in Mauritius as my mentor, who worked within the government hospitals and is based at two centres, 20 miles apart. Therefore, I had to travel between sites. Mauritius, often referred to as 'the paradise of the Indian Ocean', is a small island situated South East of Africa. The Population and Vital Statistics Document of the Republic of Mauritius states that the population is under 1.3 million, comprising of a diverse culture of Asian, Chinese, African and French. The spoken languages are English, French, Bhojpuri and Creole, the latter being the mother tongue which I speak fluently. However, documentation in patients' case notes is written in English.
