Results of the 2000 NPT Review Conference

Contrary to expectation, the 2000 NPT Review Conference was successful in adopting a Final Document by consensus on, not only future action plans, but also in review of the last five years, as a result of the effort and cooperation among the President of the Conference and each states. The Conference can be evaluated as having been successful in this sense. However, when one looks at the details of the contents, it is impossible to deny that many important issues were put on the shelf or were agreed to at a very general level due to compromise. The true result of the Conference will depend greatly on how much of what was agreed will be implemented in the next five years.
