Russia’s Mayak to begin storage of fissile materials this year

Russia’s Production Association Mayak plans to put intonoperation a storage facility for fissile materials before thenend of this year. As a first step, plutonium extracted fromnRussian nuclear warheads will be put into the facility. Thensemi-underground storage is capable of storing at least 25nmetric tons of plutonium. The nuclear material will benstored under IAEA supervision, though full IAEA safeguardsnwill not be applied.
