Slovak government approves major revision of nuclear waste fund

The Slovak government has approved a wide-ranging revision of its national nuclear fund that covers the costs of decommissioning nuclear facilities and of dealing with spent fuel and radioactive waste. Changes agreed to at a Cabinet meeting August 22 expand the list of contributors to the National Nuclear Fund beyond operating power reactors to include nuclear units that have been permanently shut. Charges for Slovakia’s sole nuclear power plant operator, Slovenske Elektarne, are likely to increase.
