Orano signs contracts worth over Eur1 billion for return of German waste

French nuclear fuel company Orano said in a statement Aug. 19 that ithad signed contracts with four German power companies valued at atotal of over Eur1 billion ($1.17 billion) for the return to Germany of nuclearwaste arising from reprocessing of spent fuel at Orano’s La Hague plantin northern France.The contracts could bring to an end a long-running relationship inwhich France, between 1977 and 1991, processed large volumes ofspent fuel from German reactors and then stored or returned resultingmaterial. There was a question of how and when to return the material.
