NRC staff has proposed changes to the agency’s accident tolerant fuels project plan to determine the applicability of current regulations and guidance to the licensing of ATF and other fuel designs with higher enrichments and burnups. Draft revision 1.2 of the ATF project plan was made public July 9. The biggest change from the current plan is the addition of a new appendix A, where 36 regulations and guidance documents are analyzed by staff for their applicability to licensing ATF and high enrichment and high burnup fuels. “We’ve incorporated a couple years’ worth of additional information, including looking at areas where significant research is focused, in order to keep the project plan relevant going forward,” NRC spokesman Scott Burnell said July 15.
