NRA approves Recyclable-Fuel Storage’s spent fuel storage project

Commissioners of Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority unanimously confirmed Sept. 2 the safety of Recyclable-Fuel Storage Co.’s interim dry spent fuel storage project at Mutsu City in Aomori prefecture. RFS intends to open the facility by March 2022, a decision the company made in December 2018, company spokesman Hiroshi Koda said in an interview Sept. 2. The facility is designed to store 3,000 mt of heavy metal of spent fuel for up to 50 years, making it the largest interim storage facility in Japan. RFS completed its construction of the building in August 2013 and filed an application with NRA Jan. 15, 2014 to confirm its project’s compliance with the December 2013 fuel facility safety requirements.
