Louisville, Kentucky—Bankrupt US aluminumnproducer Ormet was authorized by a federalnjudge on the afternoon of July 23 to curtailnoperations at the company’s 260,000nmt/year Hannibal smelter in Ohio and atnits 540,000 mt/year alumina refinery innBurnside, Louisiana.nJudge Mary Walrath of the US BankruptcynCourt for the District of Delaware said in ancourt order Ormet was “permitted but notndirected, to take such action as the debtorsndeemed necessary, in an exercise of theirnbusiness judgment and to preserve the valuenof the estate, including actions to curtailnoperations at the Hannibal smelter and thenBurnside refinery.”
