East dailies dip in December, Q1 futures stronger

Spot power prices fell in the eastern US in December, along with fuel prices, while mild temperatures kept a lid on demand, but futures for the first quarter of 2016 showed strength while staying below the same period of 2015. Day-ahead prices dropped an average of 34% year on year for seven key eastern hubs. The East had the only hubs to drop more than 38% from the previous year. ISO New England Internal Hub showed the largest decline, down 45.6%. New York Independent System Operator Zone G and Zone J came in with the second- and third-largest drops, down 41.7% and 41.2%, respectively.
