Cold boosts Northeast power prices

Northeast spot power prices edged higher Wednesday on steady demand. Packages for Friday held a hefty premium to day-ahead prices as temperatures are expected to dip further heading into the weekend. Mass Hub on-peak edged up about 25 cents to average near $38.25/MWh for Thursday delivery on the Intercontinental Exchange. Mass Hub on-peak balance-of-the-week packages, which were just for Friday delivery, traded in the low-to-mid $50s/MWh on ICE. ISO New England predicted peak demand would be around 15.9 GW on Wednesday, 16 GW on Thursday and 16.4 GW on Friday. High temperatures in Boston on Friday were expected to be in the upper 30s with lows in low 30s. Saturday highs were forecast to be in upper 30s with lows in low 20s.
