US power demand to remain modest: IEA WEO

The International Energy Agency sees power demand growth accelerating slightly in advanced economies and sees lithium-ion batteries along with power sector digitalization as emerging trends shaping power markets, according to its World Energy Outlook 2017. “The rapid penetration of devices such as smart phones and tablets has driven demand growth from [information and communication technologies] ICT and small appliances, especially digital devices, in recent years and continues to do so through to 2040,” according to the report released Tuesday. Demand from ICT and small appliance loads like computers, televisions and their supporting infrastructure increased from about 600 TWh in 1990 to over 1,700 TWh in 2016, more than double their share of total power demand.
