Mississippi Power suspends gasifier at Kemper

Mississippi Power announced Wednesday that it is immediately suspending the coal gasification portion of its controversial generation project in Kemper County, Mississippi. The announcement comes a week after Mississippi regulators directed their attorneys to draft an order that would require the Southern Co. subsidiary's integrated gasification combined-cycle project, formally named Plant Ratcliffe, to run solely on natural gas and not, in the regulators' words, on the "unproven technology" of clean coal.
