US NRC increases oversight of Georgia Power’s Vogtle nuclear plant expansion

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has increased the oversight ofGeorgia Power’s Vogtle nuclear plant expansion in Georgia afterfinalizing violations of agency regulations related to improperinstallation of electrical wiring.NRC said Nov. 18 it would conduct additional inspections of Vogtleunit 3, one of two new reactors being built at the site of two operatingunits near Waynesboro, Georgia. The two units, the first to beginconstruction in the US in more than 30 years, have experienced aseries of delays as a result of first-of-a-kind design, licensing andconstruction issues.
