Duke Energy projects solar, gas will primarily replace Carolinas coal fleet

Duke Energy predicts that a substantial mix of renewable resources, primarily solar generation, backed by battery storage and new natural gas capacity, will help the company replace its Carolinas coal fleet over the next 15 years. Modified 2020 integrated resource plans filed by Duke Energy Carolinas, or DEC, and Duke Energy Progress, or DEP, outline a preferred portfolio that calls for 15,550 MW of solar, 1,350 MW of onshore wind, 2,000 MW of incremental storage and 9,600 MW of new natural gas capacity to be added to the combined system by 2035. This scenario also calls for 2,050 MW of energy efficiency and demand response initiatives to be added by 2035.
