WEC Energy aims to cut carbon emissions 60% by 2025, 80% by 2030

Wisconsin-headquartered utility owner WEC Energy Group plans to slash carbon emissions at its operations by 60% below 2005 levels by 2025 and 80% by the end of the decade. The company, which operates electric and natural gas utilities in four Midwestern states, will boost spending on renewables and advanced technology over the next five years to meet the new goals, Executive Chairman Gale Klappa said on a conference call to discuss first quarter financial results. WEC Energy will also cut methane emissions in its natural gas distribution business to net-zero by 2030. Overall, the company expects to have net-zero emissions by 2050. "We're setting even more aggressive targets for the next several years," Klappa said on the May 3 call. "Our goal is now a 60% reduction in carbon emissions by 2025 and an 80% reduction by the end of 2030, both from a 2005 baseline. We believe we can accomplish these targets with the retirement of older, less efficient units; some operating refinements; and the use of existing technology as we continue to execute our capital plan."
