Pointing to a need to protect Michigan's environment, economy and public health from the effects of climate change, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is calling for the state to have economywide carbon neutrality by 2050. The governor signed two measures Sept. 23 to create the MI Healthy Climate Plan to serve as the roadmap for Michigan to achieve that goal. The first is Executive Directive 2020-10, which sets the goal for economywide carbon neutrality by 2050 and for Michigan to maintain net negative greenhouse gas emissions thereafter. The directive also includes an interim step for Michigan to aim to achieve a 28% reduction below 1990 levels in greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. The second is Executive Order 2020-182, which creates an advisory council within the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy to guide the department as it develops and implements the plan.
