Entergy New Orleans suggests 70% zero-carbon-emitting target by 2030

Entergy's New Orleans subsidiary has proposed that the Louisiana city adopt a non-binding goal of serving 70% of customers' energy needs with zero-carbon-emitting resources by 2030. Entergy New Orleans said the New Orleans City Council should focus on lowering greenhouse gas emissions but avoid specific requirements for meeting potential clean energy targets with certain resources. That would mean renewables such as utility-scale and distributed solar would be included, as well as other zero-carbonemitting sources, like nuclear and hydro. To reduce New Orleans' carbon footprint, Entergy also called for the electrification of transportation and other sectors, as well as demand-side management investments. The utility said it would cut 2030-level carbon emissions by about 605,000 tons if it met such a target. "The council's policy should incorporate multiple forms of clean energy investments, not limited to renewables, creating flexibility in meeting the objective of carbon emissions reductions, while also providing more avenues to maintain affordability for ENO's customers," the company said in a June 3 letter submitted to the city council obtained by S&P Global Market Intelligence.
