Battelle receives US government funding for coal-to-foam research

In an effort to use coal as a feedstock for manufacturing higher-valueproducts, research firm Battelle said Monday it was awardedgovernment funding to develop a process to convert bituminous coalinto polyurethane foam products.“This is an important project to illustrate the importance ofemploying a wide variety of approaches to use fossil fuels in anenvironmentally responsible way and reduce the amount of carbondioxide we release into the atmosphere,” Satya Chauhan, a Battellescientist and principal investigator on the project, said in astatement.
