A broad stakeholder coalition on Thursday threw its support behind a$650 million plan to redevelop the sites of New York’s last two coalfiredpower plants for large-scale data centers, but part of the projecthinges on sourcing 125 MW of Niagara Falls hydropower from a stateagency.“As the governor rapidly pushes power plants like Somerset offline– exporting energy and jobs – I believe we should be making everyeffort to convert pre-existing fossil fuel plants into renewable energyfacilities,” State Senator Rob Ortt said in a statement.New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in May that the New YorkState Department of Environmental Conservation has adopted finalregulations, known as Part 251, to require all power plants in the statemeet carbon dioxide emissions limits.The rules will ensure the state's remaining coal-fired power plantstransition to alternative sources of energy or shut down by 2020,according to the New York State Energy Research and DevelopmentAuthority.
