The Energy Department's National Nuclear Security Administration last week announced a new high-security network for sharing information between facilities in the nation's nuclear weapons complex. NNSA has had a number of problems with its cybersecurity over the past several years, and the agency hopes its new Enterprise Secure Network, or ESN, will make the facilities less vulnerable to cyber attack. "Over time, we have seen the number and types of threats to NNSA and other government information systems increase dramatically. We must be on the leading edge of cyber security to protect our data at rest, in transmission, and from external and internal sources," NNSA Administrator Thomas D'Agostino said while announcing the network in Las Vegas. The new system has been under development for five years, according to Linda Wilbanks, who oversaw the system's development for NNSA. While it is difficult to put a price tag on it because some funds went to modernization and compatibility projects associated with it, the cost is estimated to be between $60 million and $80 million, she said. Over 100 people from across the NNSA complex have worked on the project.
